Cybersecurity Basics Every Small Business Should Follow

Most small business breaches don't involve sophisticated hackers — they involve a weak or reused password, an unpatched system, or a convincing phishing email. Closing those gaps covers most of your real risk.

Start with access control. Every staff member should have their own login, with permissions limited to what their role actually needs. Shared logins make it impossible to know who did what, and impossible to revoke access cleanly when someone leaves.

Enable two-factor authentication everywhere it's offered — email, cloud storage, your billing software. It's the single highest-impact control available, and it takes minutes to turn on.

Keep backups that are actually separate from your main systems, and test restoring from them occasionally. A backup you've never tested is a hope, not a plan — especially with ransomware, where attackers specifically target connected backups first.

Finally, train your team to slow down on anything urgent-sounding that asks for money or credentials by email. A five-second pause to verify a request through a second channel stops the vast majority of successful scams.
